As you may or may not know, the University of NSW's Faculty of Engineering is one of my clients, and on Friday we were speaking about the up-coming 2013 university enrollments and how the website traffic has been affected (as they had until midnight on Friday to change their degree preferences after receiving their high school certificate (HSC) marks in late December). This reminded me of many conversations I've had with my sister about whether or not the HSC is a relevant measurement of intelligence or is it perhaps just an indication of how well we can remember information?

Email over-communication from Christmas Retailers
Now I'm sure there is a method in the madness - but I am getting very sick of seeing daily emails from online retailers, pushing their products in the lead up to Christmas. There is usually a business reason for everything that is done, so I can only assume that these particular retailers are seeing increased profits from their email bombardment, but I can hazard a guess that for every sale they get they are also equally alienating another (potentially) long-term customer. ...Reaching people who LIKE your Facebook Page
Has anybody else noticed lately that your Facebook Page posts WITHOUT a link in them (a link to your website, a link to a video or anything similar) gets more views than posts that point your fans to your content held off-Facebook? I'm wondering if perhaps Facebook has recently changed its Newsfeed algorithm to favour content that keeps users within Facebook. (more…)

...The power of (publicly available) data
I've been looking for a good data mashup for a while to make a case study and the Where Do My Taxes Go? site comes close , as it uses publicly available information from government sources to calculate its graphs.
